The Tshwane Metro Police (TMPD) is investigating an incident in which a metro police vehicle hit three officers and a suspect on the side of the road.

Shocking footage showing the vehicle running over a suspect and three TMPD officers in Hammanskraal was widely distributed on social media platforms this past weekend.

In the video it can be seen how the uniformed TMPD officers grabbed a suspect by the arms. The man may have just been arrested. Seconds later, a TMPD vehicle arrives and hits the suspect and the officers head-on. On the video, the man can be heard screaming and crying after being hit.

Supt. Isaac Mahamba, spokesperson for the Tshwane Metro Police (TMPD), confirmed the incident and described it as a freak accident.

“The members seen in the video are indeed members of the TMPD. The suspect and the three officers who apprehended him sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to hospital, where they received treatment. They were discharged on the same day.

“Later the same day, the offender was taken to the Temba police station and arrested together with the driver and another passenger of the vehicle.

“Charges against them include failure to comply with the instructions of a traffic officer, interference with the duties of a traffic officer, crimen injuria and resisting arrest,” says Mahamba.

“Although we regret the incident and especially the impression the video created on social media, we are confident that the necessary investigations are underway to investigate the matter.”

Mahamba urged members of the public with more information about the incident to call the TMPD on 012 358 7095/7096.
