Jake thinks Bulls were lucky

Jake White surely breathed a big sigh of relief when the final whistle was finally blown in Saturday’s derby between the Bulls and the Lions at Loftus Versfeld.

Because after Johan Goosen’s cucumber cool kick and Jordan Hendrikse’s missed chance, the Bulls finished the showdown with 30-28.

According to White, the home team did not manage the game well enough.

“We have so much experience in the backline, but at times it seemed as if we were just a bit overeager. Things just didn’t want to flow,” said the Pretorianers’ director of rugby.

But despite the struggling performance, the Bulls still won and in the end that’s all that matters to White.

“You often see how golfers struggle with their shots or something, but they are still at the top of the standings. Today was not our best performance at all, but we won.”

The World Cup-winning coach admits that there were at least a few highlights in the struggling performance.

“We erased a 12-3 deficit to lead 27-18 at one stage. Many teams would have dished out panicked play in such a situation.”

Still, the mistakes make him frown.

“The players can definitely learn from their performance. I’m actually very relieved and grateful that we refused to throw in the towel; even if we were happy when the final kick was missed.”

The Bulls currently occupy fourth place in the HRC standings, while the Lions are tenth.
