Elton Jantjies was suspended for four years for using a prohibited substance. The South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed the news on its website.

RNews previously reported that the 33-year-old flyhalf tested positive for the use of Clenbuterol in June 2023 – a substance used by bodybuilders, among other things, to burn fat and to boost their fitness and stamina levels.

Asthma sufferers can also use it because it enlarges a user’s airway.

In August, Jantjies undertook to seek legal help to determine the source of the drug, while in the meantime he has repeatedly shared photos of himself on social media working on his fitness in the gym.

“I asked that a B sample also be tested and that an investigation be launched to determine the possible reasons for the positive test result,” he said in a statement at the time.

But according to SAIDS, Jantjies did not exercise his right to present his case before an independent committee.

This no. 10 player made his Springbok debut in 2012 and he regularly put in good performances for the Lions in the Super Rugby tournament. He has since represented the Boks in 46 tests and scored 335 points.

However, his international career was later shrouded in controversy due to allegations of a relationship with a member of the Boks’ management team. His last game for the Springboks was on 27 August 2022 against the Wallabies in Adelaide.
