Judo champion gets nine A’s

Marco van der Westhuizen from Midstream College participated in the Commonwealth judo tournament in Gqeberha in his matric year and achieved third place. In between, he also had enough time to achieve nine distinctions in his matric final examination.

Marco earned his black belt in judo in 2022. He already in gr. 3 started with judo lessons, because his mother wanted him to be able to defend himself. “I like judo because it makes you stronger and you make new friends through it.”

His biggest challenge in matric was to tackle a project for an IT task. “The project must meet certain standards, but the rest is left to your own creativity.” Marco decided to create an online shopping app. “It was a lot of work!” he tells.

He didn’t always do so well at school, he laughs. When one day he did well in a test after studying hard for it, he realized: “I can do it!” He then continued to study hard and this year will study computer engineering at the University of Pretoria. He also proudly tells that he is going to live in the Sonop Christian Home.

In 2022, Marco started rock climbing with friends. “It’s actually something that everyone can do and for every level there is something you can climb,” he says.
