‘Kokkedoor’: And then there were three…

Henry

Although twister Ashley and rememberer Bertus visit in the Kokkedoor Fire & Flame kitchen is over, these two men return home with broad chests and hearts bursting with pride.

In the latest installment of the series, the environmental expert, Dave Pepler, took a turn next to the braai fires. He describes himself as a man with a variety of interests, of which perfume is one.

Over the years he bought one exotic perfume after another. He even brought a few of these bottles with him so that the braaiers and judges, Bertus Basson and Kobus Botha, could share in his joyful interest.

This fragrant start to the challenge laid the foundation for the braaiers’ challenge.

“Today we check whether you understand taste, flavor and aroma,” explained Bertus.

The chefs had to dedicate a sensory, vegetarian three-course meal to Dave. The judges were looking for a botanical approach, and expected the participants to work with fresh vegetables and fruit from the local area.

For their starter, they had to use celeriac, a strange ingredient for most of the braaiers. Their main course had to consist of a balanced plate of proteins, starch, vegetables and a sauce.

Their desserts were dedicated to Dave’s mother, who was a chef and boss pudding baker. The judges were looking for a mallow or brown pudding reminiscent of a home-baked, delicious dessert.

The remember grillers especially had to keep their ears sharp in this challenge, as they had to follow the twist grillers’ advice about nice plates.

The four teams, Cindy and Joubert, Kevin and Nate, Gert and Karen, and Ashley and Bertus, must have gotten to know each other further by the barbecue fires; after all, these are the final teams of the series.

Although Kevin and Nate are the only participants who have not worked together in a team before, it is precisely this team that impressed the judges and Dave the most.

They may not be too familiar with each other in the kitchen yet, but they certainly showed what they’re up to when their king crowed during tonight’s challenge.

In the end it was Ashley and Bertus who had to hang up their aprons at the end of the day.

“I take more than the footsteps of cook door on my heart together. I take so many friendships with me – especially Ash’s,” said a courageous Bertus at the end of the episode.

Despite the fact that their time in the kitchen has come to an end, both Ashley and Bertus agree – they are traveling up Kokkedoor Fire & Flame changed their lives.
