Learner dies when he ends up under a bus

A Gr. 6-learner died when he ended up under the wheels of a school bus.

According to the Gauteng Education Department, the incident happened on Thursday afternoon when learners from the Modiselle Primary School in Ga-Rankuwa were taken home after school.

“The learner apparently fell from the bus and ended up under the rear wheels of the bus,” said Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the department. It is not yet clear at this stage how the boy fell from the bus.

The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Counselors from the department were on the scene and also visited the learner’s family.

“This is indeed terribly sad news. We want to convey our deepest condolences to the family and the school community,” said Matome Chiloane, MEC for education in Gauteng.

Meanwhile, a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the police in the Eastern Cape after a taxi transporting school children was hit by a goods train in the Addo area on Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, the driver of the minibus was pronounced dead at the scene while 20 learners from a local school were injured. They were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment. One of the learners sustained serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Port Elizabeth.
