The Gauteng MEC for education, Matome Chiloane, expressed his condolences after two learners died at the David Makhubo High School in Kaalfontein.

“A memorial service was held on Thursday for a grade 10 learner who died on 2 May 2024 after an illness. During the memorial service, a grade 12 learner collapsed on the school grounds,” says Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the department.

Learners at the school immediately informed the teachers of the matriculant’s condition.

“It was initially assumed that the learner had simply fainted, but the situation was very serious. Emergency services were called and the learner’s parents were informed.”

To prevent hysteria, the incident was not immediately disclosed to those who attended the memorial service.

Unfortunately, the matriculant did not survive.

“The news of his death was announced the next day, 10 May 2024, at the school. Some learners, upset by the events, fainted at school. This incident was filmed and videos of it are being shared on social media platforms.”

There was further chaos when members of the community arrived at the school on Friday. “Some of the learners were driven away from the school grounds and there was also looting of school resources, including the food supply from the national school feeding program.”

Mabona says the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the matriculant. “All efforts are being made to determine how exactly the events unfolded.”

Chiloane expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the learners. “Our priority is to offer all the necessary support to the learners, staff and families. Counseling services and other support are offered to the school community in this very difficult time.”
