Motsepane Lolo Madigoe (40) was sentenced to more than 70 years in prison for various crimes committed between 2015 and his arrest in 2020.
He was found guilty on five charges of rape, three charges of housebreaking as well as assault and kidnapping.
Col. Malesela Ledwaba, spokesperson for the police, says Madigoe was sentenced in the High Court in Polokwane on Wednesday.
He was linked to the crimes by DNA tests.
Sgt. Magaila Makopo of the Lebowakgomo police unit against family violence, child abuse and sexual offences, led the investigation.
“Through her dedication and perseverance to protect the vulnerable and defenseless residents of the province, Sgt. Makopo ensures that Madigoe was never granted bail when he was arrested in October 2020.”
Madigoe’s reign of terror began on 10 June 2015 when he entered the home of a 36-year-old Zimbabwean woman at 01:00 in the morning at Seleteng. She was raped in front of her three minor children and a 14-year-old sibling.
On 23 July 2017, a 74-year-old woman, the mother of a friend of the accused, was raped at Seleteng. The two friends apparently had drinks at a local bar before Madigoe went to his friend’s house to rape the elderly woman. He then fled the scene.
Madigoe was sentenced to 10 years in prison for burglary with intent to rape (charge 1); life imprisonment for rape (count 2); eight years for burglary with intent to commit crime (count 3); 10 years for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (count 4); eight years for kidnapping (count 5); 15 years for rape (count 6); 10 years for burglary with intent to rape (count 7); life imprisonment for rape (count 8); life imprisonment for rape (count 9); and 15 years for rape (count 10).
Charges 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be served concurrently with charge 2. He was also declared incompetent to own a firearm.
