Lizard kills police dog in cage

The provincial police chief in Limpopo paid tribute to police dog Bina, a Belgian shepherd dog, after a python killed her in her cage at the Lephalale dog unit on Saturday.

Bina was seven years old and was trained as a drug sniffing dog at the police dog school at Roodeplaat. “She proved herself to be one of the standouts at the police’s Lephalale dog unit and helped solve drug-related cases in the province,” says col. Malesela Ledwaba, provincial police spokesperson.

Shortly before her death, the police dog helped with the arrest of three suspects who were caught with drugs worth around R75 000 on Lephalale.

She will be taken to the Roodeplaat vet for a post-mortem examination, says Ledwaba.

“The dogs have the ability to go into places where an ordinary member would not be able to; they can sniff out incriminating items, or pieces of evidence, using only their senses.

“They are definitely part of the police family. It is a great loss for the unit and the province,” says Lt. Gen. Thembi Hadebe, police chief in Limpopo.

“Rest well, Bina.”
