Look: Checkers also make fun of Bok jersey

Even Checkers took the opportunity this past week to tease the dragon with the new design of the away Springbok jersey.

In a hilarious video shared on Thursday, Checkers mocks criticism that the new Springbok jersey, which is intended to make it easier for colour-blind viewers to follow the game, looks like a Checkers 60-60 delivery vehicle.

“No matter what the color of the Springbok jersey is, we will support the Boks to achieve victory. Bring back (the cup),” is the message posted with the video.

By Friday morning, the video had already been viewed more than 40,000 times on YouTube.

Meanwhile, an advertising banner by the food manufacturer Eskort, wishing the Springboks good luck in the World Cup rugby tournament, provoked a mixed reaction. The banner is strung over the bridge leading to the main entrance to the Oliver Tambo International airport and reads “Go Springbox love Escort”. Some social media users praised Eskort’s creativity with the misspelling of the Goats’ name, while others didn’t think it was so funny.

South African Rugby (Saru) is apparently not full of laughter either.

“This type of undermining of the integrity of our brand is not the type of ‘support’ that the team welcomes,” a spokesperson for Saru told News24.
