On Friday afternoon in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) in Limpopo, the police thwarted a group of transit robbers’ plans to carry out a robbery, after which a shootout broke out during which 18 suspects were shot dead.
According to police information, officers attacked the gang when they were planning the transit robbery at a house. A shootout lasting several minutes ensued.
The shooting happened just after 2:00 p.m.
A large amount of weapons, ammunition and explosives were seized. Five vehicles were also seized, including a Land Rover Freelander, Toyota Hilux pick-up truck, Ford Ranger Wildtrack pick-up truck, Jeep Cherokee SUV, Mercedez-Benz GL and a Volkswagen Tiguan, SaferCity, a security organisation, said in confirm their report.
Brig. Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson, confirmed that Gen. Fannie Masemola, the national police commissioner, Lt. Gen. Godfrey Lebeya, head of the Falcons, and Lt. Gen. Tebello Mosikili, deputy national commissioner, went to the crime scene on Friday afternoon. There is no information yet available about their visit to the scene.
“All necessary role players have been called and are currently on the scene. Investigations are continuing,” the police confirm.
