A 55-year-old man died after a car hit him in his garden in Ottawa, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.
According to Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), the man was trimming plants outside his house when the car plowed through his garden and hit him.
“Rusa received information at 13:08 that a white Toyota Corolla left the road and hit a homeowner in his garden in Sunker Road,” says Balram.
“When officers arrived at the scene, the man was still trapped under the car.”
The 68-year-old female driver was trapped in the car and officers freed her from the car.
“According to the woman, she lost consciousness and lost control of the car.”
The homeowner suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead by paramedics from a private ambulance service.
The driver was treated for her injuries at the scene.
Const. Police spokesperson Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed that the police in Verulam are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
