A 25-year-old man from the Eastern Cape drowned on Sunday at the Glenmore Lagoon on the Tongazi River near Port Edward.

According to Gert du Plessis, station commander of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) at Port Edward, lifeguards raised the alarm when the man swam and disappeared under the water.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. An NSRI rescue vessel and swimmers were immediately called. Police divers and the canine unit joined the search soon after.

“During the search, police divers found the man’s body under the water and pulled it out,” said Du Plessis.

“Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead.”

The man’s body, whose name is not known, was handed over to the government’s forensic pathology services on Sunday. An inquest will be held.

“Our condolences go out to the deceased man’s family.”
