Man in court over international pornography syndicate

A 25-year-old man from Mossel Bay was arrested on Friday on charges of possession of child pornography. This comes after a joint operation by the police’s Serial and Electronic Crime Unit (SECI) and the US Department of Homeland Security.

This brings the number of suspects arrested since November for alleged online sexual crimes against children to eight.

RNews previously reported that the arrests form part of an international operation to track down the producers, users and distributors of child pornography.

The latest arrests were made in Worcester, Kraaifontein and Mitchells Plain.

According to Sgt. Christopher Spies, police spokesperson, said the suspect made his first appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday, after which the case was adjourned until February 23 for a formal application for bail.

“The police seized eight electronic devices and 44 depictions of child pornography.

“The accused will remain in custody until his next court appearance. Investigation into the case continues and more charges may be added as the investigation unfolds.”
