An alleged rapist is behind bars after residents of the Gilead settlement in Limpopo suspected foul play and the police quickly tracked him down.

The 12-year-old victim, a mentally challenged child, was apparently playing in the street with her friends around 16:00 on Wednesday, when the alleged rapist lured her away to a cemetery. The 42-year-old man apparently raped her and then ordered her not to say a word, says Brig. Hlulani Mashaba, police spokesperson in Limpopo.

The alleged attacker then walked to her house with the child. This immediately made other residents uneasy and they informed the girl’s family.

The child was first taken to a local clinic and then to the George Masebe Hospital for a medical examination. “The doctors at the hospital confirmed that the child had been raped and the matter was reported to the Gilead police,” says Mashaba.

“A rape case has been filed and a search for the suspect has been launched. He was arrested at around 21:00 at his home in the Mathale settlement.”

Lt. Gen. Thembi Hadebe, provincial police chief, expressed her deep concern about the rape of the disabled victim and welcomed the speedy arrest.

“I am confident that justice will prevail and that the perpetrator, due to his barbaric actions in targeting defenseless victims who cannot defend themselves, will be permanently removed from society.”

The police investigation continues and the man is expected to appear in the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
