Man shoots his own son when he apparently wanted to clean a pistol

A 41-year-old man from Masoyi in Mpumalanga was arrested on Friday for attempted murder – and possession of an unlicensed firearm – after he shot his 18-year-old son in December last year when he apparently wanted to clean his 9mm pistol. .

According to Brig. Selvy Mohlala an investigation was launched after which the man was arrested this morning around 07:00.

“During the investigation it was discovered that the man was not the legal owner of the firearm and that the weapon belonged to his deceased father in terms of the records.”

Mohlala says the seized firearm will undergo ballistic tests to determine if it has not previously been used in other crimes.

“More charges may be added to the accused’s charge sheet as the investigation continues. The suspect is expected to appear in the White River Magistrate’s Court on Monday.”

Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the provincial head, reiterated her concern about the spread of firearms – which are often involved in violent crimes.

She also commended the detectives attached to the Masoyi Police Station for their excellent work which led to the arrest of the man as well as the seizure of the firearm and ammunition.
