Management member of Rand Water dies; Jhb Chief Whip injured in firing

Two people were killed and the chief whip of the Johannesburg metro wounded after a shooting during a Rand Water event.

Officials, councilors and school children gathered at the Zakariyya Park Community Center in the south of Johannesburg on Monday morning for an event during which school clothes and shoes were distributed to learners from seven schools.

Then a group of suspects stormed into the venue and fired shots.

Two people were fatally wounded during the shooting, including a manager from Rand Water.

Three other people, one of whom is Sithembiso Zungu, chief whip of the Johannesburg metro, were wounded during the shooting.

Margaret Arnolds, speaker of the Johannesburg metro, has since confirmed that Zungu is alive and receiving medical treatment.

Rand Water expressed its shock at the incident and assured the public that it is assisting the police in its investigation.

However, the water supplier said its policy prevents it from releasing the name of the executive who died in the incident without the family’s permission.

Meanwhile, the DA expressed its shock at the incident.

“The horrific manner in which the incident took place is cause for concern. The fact that such a heinous crime could happen with young children in the line of fire underlines the alarming rate of crime and violence within our communities,” says Michael Sun, mayoral committee member for safety in the Johannesburg metro.

RNews has sent an inquiry regarding the incident to the police and is awaiting a response.
