Many dead after building fire in Johannesburg

At least 20 people were killed and 43 injured after a fire broke out in a building in the Johannesburg city center in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters and emergency service personnel were called to the scene at the corner of Albert and Delvers Street at around 01:30, said Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the Johannesburg emergency service.

Upon arrival, firefighters and emergency service personnel began to evacuate the building while efforts were made to extinguish the fire.

Initially, 10 bodies were found, but according to Mulaudzi, the death toll has since risen to 20.

The injured were transported to various healthcare facilities for further medical treatment.

The cause of the fire is currently still unknown and is being investigated. No further information is known at this stage.
