The Maroon 5 lead singer, Adam Levine, made South African hearts beat this past weekend after he addressed the crowd at the Calabash Festival music festival in Afrikaans.

“You look very beautiful,” the singer said in almost fluent Afrikaans on stage during this concert, which takes place in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Some of the country’s biggest local stars such as Shekhinah and Will Linley, as well as international stars such as Ava Max also performed.

The Maroon 5 singer’s Namibian wife, Behati Prinsloo, grew up speaking Afrikaans and he said on stage at the Cape edition of this music festival that he often tries to give her compliments in her mother tongue.

The singer confessed that Afrikaans is a “very difficult language” and that he asked Prinsloo beforehand for advice on what to say to the South African crowd.

According to Levine, his model wife, who previously walked the catwalks for brands such as Victoria’s Secret, suggested that he also compliment the crowd.

This precious moment was captured on TikTok, with many English-speaking South Africans joking on social media that the American musician’s Afrikaans accent was better than their own.

“Charlize is not going to believe this,” wrote another, referring to Theron’s previous statements that there are “only about 44 people who still speak Afrikaans in South Africa” and that the language is “extinct and not very useful language is not”.
