Matric boy dies when car hits tree

Two young friends who had just finished their matric year at Heidelberg High School were enjoying their newfound freedom when the vehicle they were driving crashed into a tree. An 18-year-old boy, Jeandré Kleynhans, was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the vehicle, his friend (also 18 years old), was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Elzona Els, founding member and general team leader of Heidelberg Volunteer Medics and First Responders, says volunteers responded to the incident around 03:30 after receiving several emergency calls. They immediately called other emergency services to the scene as well.

“The towing services were the very first on the scene. We were there shortly after them and so were the fire services.

“We are absolutely devastated by the untimely death of the young man and the hospitalization of his friend who, among other things, cracked both of his wrists.”

Els says the two boys simply crashed into the tree and that “speed was only a factor”.

“The road the boys were driving on dead ends in a park. They crashed straight into a tree.

“It is absolutely tragic. This is just typical of what young boys do who have finished school, they just enjoyed the freedom of being young. It is unfortunate that it turned into this tragedy.

“Our deepest condolences go out to all families and friends involved,” says Els.

Hoër Volkskool in Heidelberg also expressed its condolences to the bereaved families in a post on Facebook.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Jeandré Kleynhans, gr. 12, this morning. Our deepest sympathies to the family.”
