Megan Griesel murder: Three want to submit an urgent bail application

The three suspects accused of being responsible for the murder of Megan Griesel will submit an urgent application for bail on Tuesday.

Monica Nyuswa, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in Mpumalanga, confirmed that Mcolisi Makama (27), Sanele Magagula (27) and Godfrey Mashile (32) will ask the court to release them on bail.

All three appeared in the magistrate’s court in Mashishing (Lydenburg) last week on charges of murder. During the appearance, additional charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition were also brought against the three.

According to Nyuswa, due to the serious nature of the charges, the state will oppose the three’s application. All three also have previous convictions against them.

The 20-year-old Griesel, a nursery school teacher, was shot dead last year when she was presumably caught in the crossfire during a shop robbery in this town in Mpumalanga.

She was in her father, Stephan’s, bakkie on the way back home, when she ended up in the shooting.

RNews previously reported that a group of heavily armed suspects raided a gas station in the town in the early hours of the fateful day and robbed the convenience store.

The same suspects then went to a nearby business where they apparently looted liquor.

It is at this stage that Griesel drove past the robbery scene and was shot dead. The robbers presumably mistook her for a security officer.

Residents of Lydenburg have already asked on social media that people attend the court appearance on Tuesday in solidarity with Griesel’s family. During previous appearances, residents held placards saying that the accused should remain behind bars.
