Men arrested who kidnap policeman, kill

Four men were arrested this week after they allegedly robbed and killed a policeman earlier this year.

The warrant officer was on his way to Rustenburg for official police duties when his vehicle was hijacked and he was strangled.

Lt. Col. Tinyiko Mathebula, spokesperson for the Falcons, says Thabiso Phendela (29) and Sthembiso Molaba (31) were arrested earlier this week for their alleged involvement in AO Gaonathebe Diphephenyane’s murder.

Elvis Hlongwane (29) and Alexander Hobjana (40) were arrested shortly after for the same incident.

All four men are facing charges of hijacking, robbery and murder.

Mathebula says Diphephenyane was killed last month when he was traveling from Kimberley to Rustenburg for police work.

“He was apparently stopped on July 17 in Klerkskraal in the North West where his police vehicle was hijacked and his mobile phone and money looted,” he says.

“The policeman’s body was found on the side of the road the next day. Apparently he was strangled.”

An investigation was sent from stapl, which led the Hawks to Boikhutsong, Vosloorus and Brakpan where the suspects were arrested days apart.

Phendela and Molaba appeared in the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. The case was adjourned until September 1 for further investigation.

Hlongwane and Hobjana appeared in the same court on Friday. They will appear in court again on August 11, where they can apply for bail.
