An iconic leather jacket that Michael Jackson wore in a Pepsi commercial in the 1980s was sold for £250,000 (about R5.7 million).

Propstore auctioneers expected the black and white jacket to fetch between £200,000 and £400,000.

The item was among more than 200 pieces of music memorabilia sold in London on Friday, including a jacket from George Michael and a hair piece from Amy Winehouse, reports the BBC.

Jackson wore the jacket in 1984, the first in a series of advertisements in which the musician appeared for the soft drink company.
