A 43-year-old man appeared in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of rape, sexual assault and sexual preparation.
The case was adjourned until October 4 for a bail application. According to Sgt. Christopher Spies, police spokesperson, the man is accused of sexually assaulting and raping a child, currently 16 years old, between 2019 and 2021 on several occasions.
“The victim disclosed the incidents to a person he trusted, after which the matter was brought to the attention of the police.”
The case was referred to the domestic violence, child protection and sexual offenses unit in Mossel Bay. The suspect was arrested on Wednesday.
“The accused is facing 13 charges relating to the breach of the Sexual Offenses Act, including statutory rape. More charges may be added as the investigation unfolds,” Spies said.
