A motorist was rushed to hospital after he was shot on Friday morning on the N2 in a southbound direction at the Tongaat ramp in KwaZulu-Natal, during a hijacking incident.

According to col. Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the police and private security companies were in the area at the time of the hijacking incident. They saw what was happening and reacted to it.

“The suspects saw the officers and tried to flee. The officers chased them. A shootout broke out between the officers and suspects,” Netshiunda confirms.

“One suspect tried to shoot a security officer. The guard returned fire and fatally wounded the suspect in the process.”

The other suspects fled.

According to Samantha Meyrick, spokesperson for IPSS Medical, emergency services were called to the scene just before 07:00 where they stabilized the wounded motorist. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital.

The police in Tongaat are investigating a case of murder, the pointing of a firearm and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
