Murder of Pta businessman: ‘Our rock has been ripped away’

“The rock in our life – a man of God, a man with integrity, was ripped from our lives on Monday.” So reads the statement issued on Friday on behalf of Riaan van Lingen’s (64) heartbroken family.

RNews reported earlier that the police are investigating a case of murder, kidnapping and hijacking after Van Lingen, a prominent businessman from Pretoria East, was found dead on Tuesday in the Vaalrand area in Gauteng.

Van Lingen was reported missing on Monday evening after he left his home in Moreleta Park for a meeting in Olifantsfontein that morning and never returned. His body was later found with multiple gunshot wounds.

“What happened to him, he did not deserve. Our hearts are in pieces and we will miss him forever. Life has lost a jewel of a person. We love him infinitely.”

Craig Lloyd, Van Lingen’s son-in-law, says family was everything to him.

“He was a strong man with a soft heart and a positive outlook on life.

“He was a soul mate, daddy, grandfather and brother who enriched our lives in so many ways. A friend and businessman who left deep traces in the hearts of others. A role model for many.”

Lloyd says this is a really difficult and sensitive time for the family.

“Riaan was a special person, he was a fantastic husband to his wife and an even better father to his two daughters. He was also a terribly cute grandfather to his grandchildren.

“He touched so many lives. He had an incredible number of friends; I have received at least 100 or 200 calls in the last few days from friends expressing their condolences to the family.

“For the family it is really a great tragedy.”

Craig further asked that the media and members of the community give the family their privacy during this difficult time as they try to come to terms with the tragic events.

“The police are still busy with the investigation and funeral arrangements cannot therefore be made at this stage.”

Van Lingen leaves behind his wife, two daughters, three grandchildren and three brothers.
