Namibia worried about rhino poaching

Namibia wants to strengthen its fight against poaching after 28 rhinos have been killed for their horns since the beginning of the year.

The country’s environment department said an “urgent high-level meeting” had been convened with security officials to introduce measures to combat the wave of “barbaric” poaching.

The department also appealed for public help “in this difficult battle” and said no arrests have been made so far.

Namibia’s Etosha National Park was particularly hard hit with 19 rhinos being poached here. In March, during a campaign to dehorn rhinos, 10 rhino carcasses were found.

At least 87 rhinos were poached in Namibia in 2022, compared to 45 in 2021. Statistics for 2023 have not yet been released.

In South Africa, almost 500 rhinos were killed by poachers last year.
