‘New’ Proteas want to flourish against Kiwis

South Africa’s watered-down tour group to New Zealand is not doing too badly in its warm-up match against a Kiwi eleven in Lincoln.

Neil Brand’s team batted first and declared with the score at 339/5. Several batsmen – including Brand, Raynard van Tonder, Zubayr Hamza and Keegan Petersen – suspended their innings after spending enough time in the middle.

Then Dane Paterson saw to it that the New Zealanders were bowled out for 294 runs. The home team’s score did get a big boost thanks to the innings of Leo Carter (100) and Bharat Popli (89).

A somewhat weakened Protea squad – which has to do without a host of stars such as Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj – will play against the Black Caps in a few tests from Sunday.

Only two of the players who triumphed in the recent Centurion Test against India traveled to New Zealand, the result of a decision by Cricket South Africa to prioritize the lucrative SA20 tournament.

Still, Brand and co were persuaded to do well against Tim Southee, Devon Conway and Neil Wagner.

Especially after the West Indies – also without some of their top players – finished playing Australia away from home a few days ago.

“There is always pressure to play for South Africa, but at the same time it also comes with incredible pride. We do not want to disappoint the country; we want to perform well,” promised the new Protea captain.
