The family of Mia Kühn, the 16-year-old learner from Garsfontein High School in Pretoria whose body was discovered on the school’s rugby field on Tuesday around 08:00, says no foul play is suspected in her death.

Jacques Broodryk, spokesperson for the family, said in a statement on Saturday that they would like to put an end to the speculation that foul play is suspected.

“At this stage of the police investigation, all evidence points to a tragic accident. It would appear that Mia climbed up one of the floodlight masts, which are used to illuminate the rugby field, and fell.”

Broodyrk says the family would like to say thank you very much for the love and support they receive from the community.

“Her family and friends are very sad about her sudden death and are still trying to come to terms with the huge loss. Her loved ones are grieving and are not in a position to make any further comments at this stage. We request that the family’s privacy be respected at this stage so that they can have the opportunity to mourn Mia’s passing with dignity.”

Friends of Mia told RNews on Wednesday how infectious Mia’s smile was and that she “always put her family and friends before herself and her own problems”.

Mia Kuhn’s life celebration service will take place on Wednesday from the Dutch Reformed Church, Valleisig.

Her father Gustav, a film producer, also dedicated an emotional poem to Mia on Facebook:
