The Bloemfontein police are investigating a case of murder after the body of an elderly woman was found in her home in the city on Wednesday morning.

Lt. Col. Thabo Covane, police spokesperson, says the Bayswater police in Bloemfontein received an emergency call from Monsstraat around 09:00, after which police officers were sent to investigate.

Officers met the owner of a gardening services business – who rents a space at the back of 75-year-old Barbara Elaine Coetzee’s house – there.

“The workers from the garden services say they arrived at the house where the truck with tools was parked. The gate was apparently not unlocked for them like every other morning,” says Covane.

“One of the workers then jumped over the fence and saw the body of the elderly man lying on the floor through the window.”

Paramedics were called to the scene, but Coetzee was pronounced dead.

“Experts from the local criminal records center combed the scene for any evidence that could be of value in the investigation of the case.”

A case of murder was filed at the Bayswater police station.

When asked, the police did not want to reveal any further details about Coetzee’s death.

“The investigation is at a sensitive stage; it is a very emotional matter for the family. We cannot divulge information at this stage, as it could also hinder the investigation,” says Covane.
