Police foil transit robbery; robbers killed

Two robbers were shot dead when the police foiled a transit robbery in Dobsonville in Soweto on Saturday evening.

Brig. Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson, says the incident took place when the police followed up on information about a planned transit robbery at around 17:30 on Saturday. When officers arrived at the scene in Dobsonville, they intercepted suspects who were on their way to blow up a transit vehicle.

According to Mathe, the suspects first opened fire on the police, after which the officers returned fire.

“Two suspects were fatally wounded. The police seized an R5 rifle, two AK47s and three vehicles used to carry out the crime.”

Fannie Masemola, national police commissioner, praised the officers involved for their work.

“Our intelligence operatives are on the ground, and our teams are on high alert. We cannot rule with criminals: It’s either them or us. Our focus is to ensure the safety of law abiding citizens.

“We will continuously sharpen our focus on cracking down on serious and violent crime, with the aim of catching and successfully prosecuting those behind transit robberies.”

The police are currently looking for more suspects who fled the scene on foot.
