Police kill robber in Sabie

An alleged robber was killed and another injured after a shootout broke out between the police and armed suspects after the latter allegedly robbed a shop in Sabie, Mpumalanga.

The robbery took place on Saturday at 15:15.

According to Brig. Selvy Mohlala, spokesperson for the police in Mpumalanga, a group of about four robbers apparently rushed into a supermarket and held people inside the store at gunpoint. The suspects then robbed the owner of the shop of an unknown amount of cash and fled the scene.

“The police were informed about the incident and reacted swiftly. They came upon the robbers after which they fled on foot. The officers chased them,” says Mohlala. “The suspects started shooting at the police, to which the police shot back. One suspect was wounded in the process and another was shot dead.”

The injured suspect, who is understood to be 24 years old, was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment. The other two managed to evade the police. No policemen were injured in the incident.

According to the police, a 9 mm pistol and 11 cartridges were apparently found in the possession of the deceased suspect.

The police are now investigating a case of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“The police are still looking for the two remaining suspects and any information that could lead to their arrest would be greatly appreciated,” said Mohlala. Members of the public with information about the incident can contact the police on 08600 10111 or send a message on the police app MYSAPSAPP.
