Police officers shot during robbery in Nyanga

A 32-year-old man was arrested on charges of robbery and four charges of attempted murder.

Capt. Frederick van Wyk, spokesman for the Western Cape police, says a group of men threatened the staff of a chain store at a shopping center in Nyanga with firearms at around 08:10 on Friday. They demanded the keys to the safe.

“The manager of the store shouted for help and the suspects ran away with cash from the cash registers. An official Nyanga police vehicle arrived at the car park in the meantime and the suspects immediately shot at them.”

Three female police officers were seriously injured and were taken to a hospital.

“Further investigation by members of the provincial investigation unit, in collaboration with the provincial tracking team, led the team to an address in Browns Farm, Philippi. A 32-year-old man was arrested here.”

The suspect is expected to appear in Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The investigation continues into the remaining suspects.
