Three suspects were killed early Wednesday morning in a shootout with the police in Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Brig. Jay Naicker, police spokesperson, said the police received information about a group of suspects who are allegedly involved in serious crimes – including murders committed in the Inanda area – and are hiding at the Lungelani informal settlement in La Mercy.

“A team consisting of several police units, including members of the Falcons, descended on the house in the settlement. When the suspects realized that they were surrounded, they opened fire on the police after which a back-and-forth shooting broke out.

“Three suspects were shot dead and the police confiscated two pistols. It is suspected that other members of the group may have escaped in the shooting.”

Naicker says the operation continues and the police have launched a search for the other suspects.

“Residents of KwaZulu-Natal are constantly harassed by members of this group. The police will leave no stone unturned in their constitutional mandate to combat and investigate crime.”
