Police shoot dead two at Ballito estate

Two people who are linked to the murder of five people in Richards Bay earlier this week died in a shootout with the police at an estate on Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal.

RNews earlier reported that the victims died after at least five suspects jumped out of a blue Volkswagen Polo at a shopping center in Richards Bay and opened fire on the victims. They then fled.

Four of the victims died at the scene and a fifth was later pronounced dead at a local clinic.

Col. Robert Netshiunda, police spokesperson, says police officers from the KwaZulu-Natal stabilization unit on Wednesday followed up on information about where the attackers might be and went to the house on the unnamed estate where the suspects opened fire on them.

“The police fired back and two suspects were fatally wounded,” says Netshiunda.

At the house, the police confiscated six firearms and more than 1,000 cartridges. The police investigation into the shooting and the search for other people involved continues.

The independent police investigation directorate (Opod) is also conducting an investigation into the shooting between the police and the suspects.
