Prime Circle has a new lead singer

The South African rock group, Prime Circle, announced on Tuesday that Gavin Edwards, an English singer and first runner-up of The Voice SAwill take Ross Learmonth’s place as lead singer.

“We are very excited to announce that Gavin Edwards will be stepping behind the microphone as the new singer of Prime Circle. This incredible singer and songwriter brings 28 years of global experience, a shared vision and passion to the band, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on together,” the band wrote in a post on their official Facebook page.

The 44-year-old Edwards’ audition for the first installment of The Voice SA gained attention in 2016 thanks to his catchy version of A Great Big World’s “Say Something”.

Although he did not enter the competition as a winner, his first single, “Sparks”, was released the same year. Other successful singles, including 2020’s “Heroes” followed.

Fans can look forward to a new Prime Circle single in March, followed by Edwards and the band’s first short album together, titled “The World We Know”.

“We look forward to seeing you all out on the road soon, and we thank our wonderful fans for your unwavering support since we embarked on this new journey,” reads the band’s Facebook post.

RNews reported earlier that Learmonth and the group decided to part ways after 23 years together.

The raspy-voiced singer, who released his debut solo album in 2023, explained in an official statement that he and the group were experiencing “creative differences”, and that as a result he wanted to focus on his solo career.

According to Learmonth, attempts were made to simultaneously fulfill his roles as Prime Circle frontman and solo artist, “but a different decision was made, which I have to respect”.

He describes the decision as “the most difficult one I have ever made”, and wished the remaining members, consisting of Dirk Bisschoff, Marco Gomes, Neil Breytenbach and Dale Schnettler, success.

Prime Circle was founded by Gomes in 2000 and enjoyed local and international success with their hits such as “Hello” and “She Always Gets What She Wants”.
