The police are investigating a case of murder, kidnapping and hijacking after a prominent businessman from Pretoria East was found dead in the Vaalrand area in Gauteng on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old Riaan van Lingen was reported missing on Monday evening after he left his home in the Wingate Park golf estate for a meeting in Olifantsfontein in the morning and never returned.

Van Lingen’s family last spoke to him on the day of his disappearance around 1:50 p.m. He was expected to be home at 5:00 p.m.

Col. Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, spokesperson for the police, says the tracking system in his white double cab Ford Ranger was disconnected and family members could not get hold of him, after which they reported him missing. A large amount of money was apparently also withdrawn from his account.

A search was immediately launched. Several private security companies helped search for the missing businessman. His body was later found with multiple gunshot wounds.

Nevhuhulwi says intelligence-driven information led the police to a suspect the same day, after which they arrested him.

“This suspect led the police to a second suspect in Tembisa, where a firearm with ammunition, police reflective vests and a cap were found.

“The firearm found must be subjected to ballistic tests to confirm whether it was used in the crime or any other serious crimes,” says Nevhuhulwi

Both suspects are expected to appear before the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of murder, kidnapping and hijacking.
