Race, Ryan lets the sparks fly

Those who complain about Rassie van der Dussen’s batting pace should have only looked at today’s SA20 match between MI Cape Town and the Joburg Super Kings.

The 34-year-old batsman scored the first century of the second version of the local target-and-mocker tournament at the Wanderers and he, along with the aggressive Ryan Rickelton, saw to it that the Cape Town team posted a mammoth 243/5 in the allotted 20 overs. .

Van der Dussen smashed 15 boundaries in his magnificent innings of 104 runs from just 50 deliveries, while Rickelton hit 98 runs from 49 balls.

And the spectacular performances were not against just such bowlers either.

The Super Kings have a fiery bowling attack with Nandre Burger and Lizaad Williams leading the chorus, while the experienced Imran Tahir is still a threat in the shorter version of the game.

Then England’s Moeen Ali boasted 199 T20 wickets in the run-up to the match.

But Van der Dussen and Rickelton’s flashing bats did not spare anyone: Burger conceded 13 runs per over – admittedly he ended the innings excellently with two wickets – while four sixes were hit from Zahir Khan’s bowling.

The Super Kings’ Faf du Plessis and Co. will have to know their story to chase this target successfully. But on the Wanderers anything is possible.
