Sebasa Mogale (52) and his wife Dorah Mogale (44) briefly appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of fraud from a Bitcoin scam.

They were each released on bail of R10 000 and will appear in court again on 20 May 2024.

Sebasa, who in 2020 worked at Thobela FM, one of the SABC’s radio stations, advertised a prank called “Mining City” on radio, says col. Malesela Ledwaba, spokesperson for the police. “He explained how people can become rich if they invest money in the Mining City packages. The investors would be rewarded according to the amount of money they invest.”

He encouraged listeners to visit his office in Landdros Mare Street in Polokwane to attend a session where he and two other people would present a seminar.

“Listeners attended the session and brochures were distributed to them detailing the various packages. The persons believed in the prank because Sebasa is a radio announcer. They received reference numbers to pay their money into a Standard Bank account of the Altcoin trader.”

The packages ranged from R6 500 to R253 000 with estimated payouts.

The victims deposited their money and were told to return to the office to create an email address and login details so they could access the money they had invested.

The victims were told to wait six months before withdrawing anything so that they could see a bigger profit.

“The problem started when the victims wanted to withdraw their money. That’s when they realized the login details weren’t working. When they called Sebasa to find out what was happening to their investment, he said that Mining City had collapsed because of the inflation rate.”

This meant that the investors lost their money in the scam.

The victims returned to the office in Landdros Marestraat, but the office was closed and Sebasa’s phone only had a voicemail.

“By May 2022, 10 files against the suspects have been registered with the police in Polokwane and Mokopane. Even more cases are expected to be filed.”

The police investigation continues.

Shortly after Sebasa’s scandal came to light, the SABC removed him from the air and fired him. Thobela FM said they are suspending him to give him the opportunity to resolve his personal matters. Sebasa also played the role of Dr. Hlongwane up Skeem Together interpret.
