Raducanu again hungry for success

Emma Raducanu captured the imagination of the tennis world in 2021 when she walked away with the US Open laurels. But since her triumph in New York, she has struggled with her level of play, while injuries have also become a regular occurrence.

Now she won her first Grand Slam showdown in almost a year when she squared off with Shelby Rogers in the Australian Open.

The final score was 6-3 and 6-2 in the young Briton’s favour.

Raducanu underwent several operations on her ankle and wrist in 2023 and she excitedly told after the match that it was “unbelievable” to play without discomfort.

“The victory tastes extra sweet because it’s my first Slam in a long time. Shelby is a well-respected opponent – she has already come up with some great performances – but I am satisfied with my game,” said the 21-year-old player.

“The time away from the track made me very hungry for success. I am very grateful to be fit again and play completely without pain.”

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz also started his tournament on a winning note.

The world’s second best player beat France’s Richard Gasquet 7-6, 6-1 and 6-2.
