Rassie Erasmus admitted to hospital

Rassie Erasmus, director of South African rugby, was admitted to hospital after apparently suffering severe burns. According to a statement by South African Rugby (Saru), Erasmus had to undergo a medical procedure after suffering chemical burns.

Saru describes the incident as a “freak accident”, which happened while he was using a strong disinfectant. “He is otherwise healthy and expects to be back at full steam within the next few weeks,” Saru spokesman Andy Colquhoun said on Saturday.

On Thursday, Erasmus commented on the Springboks’ return to Bloemfontein for their showdown against Portugal in July this year. “We are very excited to return to Bloemfontein for this historic match and we are determined to make our passionate fans proud,” he said.

Saru confirmed in November that Erasmus will once again take over the reins as rugby coach after Jacques Nienaber joined Irish club Leinster as coach.
