Road scraper on bricks after thugs loot wheels

A road scraper from the Ekurhuleni municipality is wheelless and on bricks a few weeks after six brand new tires were bought for it at around R250 000.

Sivuyile Ngodwana, mayor of Ekurhuleni, said during a recent visit to the Sinaba Stadium that miscreants held security officers at gunpoint while they stole all six wheels from the scraper.

Ngodwana sharply condemned the vandalism and theft of municipal property and infrastructure and said it “derails service delivery”.

“Theft of municipal property not only delays the delivery of services, but also harms residents who directly benefit from these services,” says Ngodwana.

“We condemn this senseless theft.”

The road scraper belongs to the local authority’s Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and is mainly used to scrape informal football pitches for residents.

The incident was reported to the police and a case of theft is being investigated. No arrests have been made yet.
