On Saturday, Eskom appealed to South Africans to (despite the cold) use electricity sparingly to prevent even higher phases of load shedding later this weekend.
“Due to the drop in temperatures, we are appealing to all members of the public to maintain electricity demand to low levels by switching off non-essential appliances, mainly geysers and pool pumps.
“This will help to relieve pressure on the power system and ensure that we avoid higher stages of load shedding this weekend,” the power supplier said this morning.

As things stand now, phase 4 applies until Sunday at 05:00, followed by phase 2 until Sunday at 16:00.
Burden power was unexpectedly increased to phase 5 at one stage on Friday due to a higher than expected demand for electricity.
