Security guard shoots at boys on school grounds; one dead

A 62-year-old Eastern Cape security guard was arrested after he went to a school in Lusikisiki, north of Port St., on Thursday evening. Johns, allegedly shot dead a 13-year-old boy and wounded another boy.

Col. Priscilla Naidu, Eastern Cape police spokesperson, says a group of seven children entered the Matafeni Junior Secondary School’s school grounds at around 18:30 on Thursday evening to gain access to the school’s Wi-Fi.

The school’s security guard caught the children and they ran away.

The security guard reportedly fired shots from behind, hitting two boys. One was pronounced dead at the scene while the other, also 13 years old, was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The security guard fled the scene, but was arrested later that evening.

He is expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court on Monday on charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm (the serial number was filed off) and illegal possession of ammunition.

Lt. Gen. Nomthetheleli Mene, police commissioner in the Eastern Cape, says the incident highlights the importance of an appropriate response in security situations.

Mene also gave the assurance that the matter will be thoroughly investigated to ensure that justice is done.
