Security guard thwarts hijackers

A vigilant security guard thwarted a group of hijackers in Khayelitsha on Friday morning.

Lt. Col. Malcolm Pojie, spokesperson for the police in the Western Cape, says five suspects struck at around 10:30. “The truck delivered goods in Evelyn de Bruin Street, Mandela Park. Five armed men approached the truck and threatened the occupants with firearms. They drove away with the loaded truck.”

A security guard in the area saw the incident happen and intervened.

“Shots were fired and one of the suspects, who was driving the truck, was hit. The truck came to a stop and the rest of the suspects fled.”

“Paramedics pronounced the suspect dead at the scene. He had a 9 mm firearm and ammunition in his possession.”

Harare police are conducting an inquest and are also investigating a case of hijacking with an additional charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The investigation continues.
