Sentence for Pongola truck driver welcomed

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has welcomed the heavy prison sentence imposed on a truck driver after a fatal accident.

Sibusiso Siyaya was sentenced on Thursday in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, sitting in Pongola, in connection with the collision that took place on 16 September 2022. He was found guilty on 20 charges of murder, as well as reckless and negligent driving and failure to render the necessary assistance at the scene of an accident.

The collision claimed the lives of 20 people, most of them school children.

The case has been ongoing since 2022 and several people and experts, including forensic experts, have testified.

“As a government, we welcome this historic verdict. The fact that Siyaya was found guilty of murder, among other things, indicates the seriousness that the criminal justice system attaches to the prosecution of road traffic offenders,” says Sipho Hlomuka, MEC for transport, community safety and liaison in KwaZulu-Natal.

“We hope that this verdict will be a warning to other reckless motorists on the road.

“We also believe that the families will find closure by knowing that the person responsible for the tragedy that took away their loved ones has been sent to prison.”
