Several injured in knife attack at Sydney mall

Police in Australia said on Saturday they had received reports that “several people” were injured in a knife attack at a busy shopping center in Sydney, Australia.

The incidents took place at the Westfield Bondi Junction Centre. The mall was full of shoppers on Saturday afternoon (local time).

The center has since been closed and police are urging residents to avoid the area.

New South Wales Ambulance told AFP one man was shot dead by police. He is believed to have been one of the attackers.

The motive for the attack is not yet known.

Eyewitnesses said there was panic at the scene. Shoppers ran for safety and police attempted to secure the area.

Several people took shelter in a supermarket. They stayed there for about an hour.

CCTV footage by local media shows a man with a large knife running through the shopping center with injured people lying on the ground.
