Shimlas ends Pukke’s winning run

It was as usual an action-packed Varsity Cup rugby on Monday with the Shimlas, Maties, Ikeys and Ixias winning their respective matches.

The Shimlas are currently first in the official standings, followed by Wits and the NWU-Pukke.

Shimlas beat Pukke in death throes

Henri van Heerden’s try in the dying stages of the game ensured that the Shimlas beat the NWU-Pukke 35 – 26 in Bloemfontein.

The home team enjoyed an excellent run-up to the match to lead 21 – 0, but the Potchefstromers are not the defending champions for nothing.

They scored four tries and suddenly the score was 26 apiece. Up to and including Van Heerden’s try, of course.

It was the Pukke’s first defeat of the latest season.

A couple of tries and Ntokozo Makhaza’s kick ensured that the Capetians enjoyed a half-time lead of 24 – 7.

In the second half, the rainy weather had a definite influence on the game, but it did not stop the Ikeys and they eventually celebrated a comfortable victory.
