Jannik Sinner’s fiery level of play in Turin means that he has won his ATP finals group. The 22-year-old Italian beat Holger Rune 6-2, 5-7 and 6-4 to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.
According to Sinner, it was important for him to maintain his concentration – especially after he had earlier played a bar shot against Novak Djokovic.
“I have never been able to deal with Rune before and I really did my best now. I enjoyed a very good run-up to the match, but his serving improved significantly in the second set while the deciding set could have gone either way,” said the young Italian.
“It’s been a roller coaster ride to get here, but I’m very grateful to be in the semi-final.”
His good performance also ensured that Djokovic was able to qualify for the knockout matches – if he had lost to Rune, the Serbian would not have made it through.
Djokovic, in turn, beat Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 7-6, 4-6 and 6-1 in his final group showdown and a seventh ATP finals title is now in his sights.
