Six dead, three wounded in Texas shooting

A man from Texas in the USA was arrested on Wednesday after a shooting incident claimed the lives of six people. Three more people, including two police officers, were wounded.

According to Acting Austin Police Chief Robin Henderson, the shooting happened within hours of Tuesday in the Texas city.

“Four victims were shot dead and a man and a woman were found dead in a house in the San Antonio area. The suspect was also involved in a shootout with the police.

“We firmly believe that one suspect is responsible for all the incidents. However, he is now in custody and no longer poses a threat to the Austin community”.

Henderson says the shooting between the police and the suspect later broke out at the scene of a robbery – where two victims were found dead.

“One of the police officers was wounded during the shooting, after which the armed man fled the scene in a vehicle. However, the police chased him after which he was involved in a collision with the vehicle.

“The man was arrested in possession of a firearm and charged with murder.”

Henderson described the incidents as a series of “tragic events and horrific crimes”.

At least four incidents in Texas are linked to the same suspect; this includes two double murders, the wounding of a police officer near a school and the pointing of a firearm at a passing cyclist.

Authorities later searched the suspect’s home in Bexar, San Antonio, where they found the bodies of a man and a woman, believed to be in their 50s, against the door of a small room.

“It’s definitely a gruesome crime scene,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar told reporters.

He says they suspect the man first committed the Bexar murders “after which he drove to Austin and committed the other gruesome murders there”.

Shooting incidents are alarmingly common in the US, a country where there are more firearms than citizens and where efforts to curb the spread of firearms are always met with fierce political resistance.
